Doug Hawkins, the boy from Braybrook, a true legend of modern AFL football and an idol to thousands at the Western Oval
….(renamed the Whitten Oval). He even has the distinction of having part of the ground named after him – The Doug Hawkins Wing, such is his popularity.
After seventeen years of football involving 350 games, Hawkins hung up his boots to enter the media world. Hawkins has achieved what few other footballers can, everybody loves him regardless of your loyalty to whatever footy team. Through his television commitments, particularly The Footy Show, Doug Hawkins has established himself as a personality in huge demand, whether it’s doing television and radio commercials for car dealerships, pizza outlets, clothing manufactures or pay TV networks, Doug Hawkins – the lovable larrikin, the man with the heart of gold and the laughing clown, is a bona fide cult hero.
In 1997 Doug joined Triple M’s Football Commentary Team, giving his expert comments on the state of play, the tactics and strategies adopted by teams. Emotions flow very easily for Doug, none more evident then when his beloved Western Bulldogs lost a nail biting game in last year’s semi final clash with Adelaide Crows, ending an opportunity to play their first Grand Final for over 40 years. Doug unashamedly cried for the team he loves, and the listening audience of Triple M will never forget that poignant moment in radio.
Hawkins has also established a successful career of guest speaking at business and sporting functions, and while away from the media and the public spotlight, Doug Hawkins is a devoted family man, enjoying time with his wife Raelene and children Ricky, Lea and Toni (he was named Victorian Father Of The Year in ’98).
In 1998 Doug Hawkins joined Jason Dunstall to present the morning show on Triple M. “Dougie & Dunstall” airs from 10 am to 12 noon Monday to Friday. It received enormous success and high ratings throughout 1998, 1999 and now moving into the year 2000, he has teamed up with Jason Monday to Thursday. Then on Fridays he is part of the high rating show on Triple M “The Fight Club” with Jason, Dermott Brereton and Triple M’s newest recruit Sam Newman. Plus he is part of Channel 7’s new Football Show “The Game” which is on every Thursday night with Jason, Dermott, Collingwood Legend Tony Shaw and various other football personalities. His time is also greatly consumed by special comments on Triple M Football and Channel 7’s live football coverage.>
